LAID-BACK OFF THE FIELD, NFL HALL OF FAMER WILLIE ROAF WAS ANYTHING BUT ON THE FIELD.
A relentless offensive tackle, during his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech University and throughout his 13 NFL seasons, Roaf manhandled bruising defenders whose sole focus was to take out his teammates.
One of the best offensive linemen to play professional football, Roaf was named first-team All-NFL seven times and was voted to the NFL Pro Bowl 11 of his 13 seasons. In 2012, Willie was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. He is one of only 346 players in the NFL’s 100 year history to receive such a prestigious honor.
"To be able to make it to the Hall of Fame coming from Pine Bluff, Arkansas is still unbelievable. To be a part of that fraternity, because of everything I was able to do on the football field is really special. It took a lot of hard work, but it paid off to make it into that top group of guys," says Roaf —who played for both the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs between 1993 and 2005."
LIKE MANY ATHLETES WHO PLAYED PROFESSIONAL SPORTS AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL, IT WASN'T UNTIL AFTER RETIRING THAT ROAF FELT THE FULL TOLL THAT HIS FOOTBALL CAREER HAD ON HIS BODY AND MIND.
"When I retired, there was a big adjustment. I had major back surgery in 2013 that left me feeling lethargic and without a lot of energy. When we moved to Florida, the humidity helped my back and knees some, but my energy hadn't been where I'd like it to be."
